A beginner pattern should leave room to change direction and correct a cut. Start with straight-grained, identified carving stock and make the first version larger than a tiny ornament. The following layouts are simple drawing guides rather than printed templates.

Use a ruler to draw these dimensions directly on paper or wood. For reference, 25 mm is close to 1 in; these are metric layouts, so keep the measurements consistent.
Remove corners before chasing detail
On the marker, keep a flat face for writing and taper gradually toward a blunt point. It is a label, not a sharp stake. Use suitable wood and finish if it will remain in damp soil.
On the pebble, cut the square corners into broad facets, then refine the transitions. Preserve enough flat area to hold it securely. Avoid turning it into a slippery, unsupported object while still making heavy cuts.
On the tree, leave the base broad and flat. Shape the outline before suggesting branches with shallow cuts. Deep notches near the trunk can leave fragile short-grain points.
Let the grain set the direction
Take small cuts and reverse direction when fibers start lifting ahead of the edge. Keep the holding hand outside the cutting path. Where you cannot hold the work safely, clamp it or change to a more suitable workholding method. Protective gloves do not justify a cut toward a hand.
Inspect with side light before sanding. A sharp facet can be intentional; abrasive does not need to erase all evidence of carving. If the shape is decorative, say so when giving it away. Small carved pieces are not automatically suitable as children's toys.
Save the paper outlines and add notes about the cuts that tore. The second version can improve the layout rather than merely repeat the same struggle.
